Rissim Contemporary is pleased to present Frekuensi, a new body of work by Fadhli Ariffin “Pali” (b.1989, Perak). Frekuensi follows on from Pali’s first solo show at Rissim Contemporary in 2020, Peristiwa Di Awangan, where he battled with the waves of uncertainty from the Covid-19 pandemic.

2 years later, Pali portrays his experiences in two parts: Mencari Frekuensi and Frekuensi. The former, a series of small works, depicts Pali’s struggles with finding sustenance and purpose as an artist confined to his home in Hulu Langat during a strict lockdown. Unable to access his studio, Pali used bamboo sticks in lieu of paintbrushes as he continued to create through his frustrations. Darker tones of textured and repetitive patterns pulse and vibrate; the imagery reminiscent of vinyl grooves luring us into the soundwaves of Pali’s search for his internal wavelength.

The series of larger works, titled Frekuensi, is a response to this. In a celebration of artistic freedom and expression, Frekuensi brings us on an emotive exploration of Pali’s journey as an artist. As he embraces and reverberates on his chosen frequency he immerses his audience in a bright and coloristic visual feast. Paint cresting across canvases, concealing and revealing accents of red, yellow and blue primaries, we find layers of brilliant hues disrupted by abrupt lines. The defiance of conventional colour patterns brings with it a strange harmony that absorbs us into a space between stability and chaos.
